Where the money goes

A kitchen, line by line.

Across our last two years of kitchens, the budget divides roughly the same way every time. Knowing the split helps you decide where to spend and where to save.

Where to save

  • Keep the sink where it is. Moving plumbing is one of the larger line items.
  • Choose a mid-range appliance package and a better range hood.
  • Spend on the drawers and hardware you’ll touch daily, save on the upper cabinet fronts.

Where not to

The countertop template, the waterproofing behind a sink wall, and the electrical. Those are the places a cheaper bid usually cuts, and you can’t fix them later without starting over.
