Should homeowners be able to book online?

Letting homeowners pick a time slot online can fill your schedule while you sleep. For some jobs it’s exactly the wrong tool.

The short version

Online booking works for routine, predictable jobs: tune-ups, estimates, drain cleaning, recurring lawn service. A request form with photos is better for jobs you have to price first. Emergencies belong on the phone. Whatever you use, it should create the job in your software, not an email.

Many homeowners would rather pick a time than make a call, especially for something routine. Jobber, Housecall Pro and most field service software include online booking you can put on your website and Google profile. The question is which jobs to offer it for.

Good jobs for online booking

  • Maintenance visits and tune-ups.
  • Free estimates and inspections.
  • Standard jobs with a set duration, like a drain cleaning or a water heater flush.
  • Recurring service: lawn care, seasonal cleanups.

These have predictable lengths and prices, and a booked slot is a commitment.

Better as a request with photos

  • Anything you price after seeing it: remodels, roofing, panel upgrades, painting.
  • Jobs where the right tech, part or crew size depends on the details.

A request form that asks a few specific questions and takes photos gives you what you need to quote, or to show up prepared.

Keep on the phone

Water coming through the ceiling, no heat in January, sparks from a panel, a tree on the roof. Emergencies need a person, now. Make sure the site says so, with the number right there.

Setting it up well

  • Offer arrival windows, not exact times, if that’s how you work.
  • Show the fee for the visit, if there is one, before they book.
  • Limit what can be booked online so the schedule stays sane.
  • Confirm by text, with a reminder the day before.
  • Connect it to your software, so a booking is a job, not an email.
Test it as a customer. Book a job on your own site from your phone. If it takes more than a minute or two, simplify it.

Does online booking lead to more no-shows?

It can, if bookings aren’t confirmed. Most field service software sends an automatic confirmation and a reminder by text, and some let you require a card on file for certain jobs. Use them. A booked slot that gets a reminder the day before is far more likely to be there when the truck arrives.

Where should the booking button go?

  • In the header on every page, next to the phone number.
  • On each service page that’s bookable, near the price.
  • On your Google Business Profile, if your software supports it.
  • In your email signature and review request messages.

An online booking checklist

  • Only routine, predictable jobs are bookable.
  • Arrival windows match how you actually schedule.
  • Any visit fee is shown before booking.
  • Confirmations and reminders go out by text.
  • Bookings create jobs in your software, not emails.
  • Emergencies are clearly sent to the phone.
  • You’ve tested the whole flow on a phone.
