Smell gas? Leave first. Then call.
If you smell gas, get everyone out and call CenterPoint Energy from outside. Once the utility has made it safe, we do the repair and the paperwork that gets your service back on.
Get out, then call the utility
Don’t flip switches or start a car in the garage. From the sidewalk, call CenterPoint Energy’s gas leak line or 911.
They may red-tag your meter
A red tag means gas stays off until a licensed plumber repairs the problem and the city inspects it.
Repair, permit, inspection
We find and fix the leak, pull the City of Houston permit, pass the pressure test and schedule the inspection.

What a red tag actually means
When CenterPoint finds a leak or an unsafe condition, they shut off the meter and hang a red tag. The gas stays off until the repair is made by a licensed plumber and the City of Houston signs off. That usually means a permit and an inspection, and that’s the part people don’t expect.
We handle the permit and book the inspection for you. Most red-tag repairs are back in service within two to three days, and it’s faster if the inspector has an early opening.
Asked about gas.
What do I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house, don’t touch light switches, and call CenterPoint Energy or 911 from outside. Call a plumber after the utility has made it safe.
Who can fix a CenterPoint red tag?
A licensed plumber with a gas endorsement repairs it, and the City of Houston inspects it before service is restored.
Red-tagged? Call dispatch.
We start with the permit so the inspection isn’t the holdup.
