The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and historically its busiest stretch is from mid-August through October.

Winter: install
January to April is the best time to put in a generator. Permits are quick and units are in stock.

April and May: service
Pre-season service for existing generators. Fill propane tanks.

June and July: check
Run a test. Check your surge protector’s indicator light. Restock the CO alarm batteries.

August to October: watch
The historic peak. If a storm is forecast, top off propane early; delivery trucks get backed up.

November: recover
Post-season service if the generator ran for days. Plan anything you learned for next year.
