Ten seconds after the lights go out.
A standby generator sits outside on a pad, connected to gas or propane, and starts on its own when the utility power drops. An automatic transfer switch moves your house onto it, usually within seconds.
Installed prices.
Prices include the generator, automatic transfer switch, pad, electrical permit and inspections. Gas piping is done by our licensed gas partner under its own permit.
Where it goes
Generator placement follows the manufacturer’s installation manual, the NFPA 37 standard and local code. In practice that usually means a spot along the side of the house, at least five feet from any window, door or vent so exhaust can’t get inside, with clearance around it for service.
Some units are tested and labeled for installation closer to the wall, as near as eighteen inches at the back. The label on the specific model decides that, not the brochure.
What the county checks
In Hillsborough County a licensed electrical contractor pulls the electrical permit, there’s a rough-in inspection and a final, and the county wants the installation manual and the manufacturer’s clearances on file. Gas gets its own permit. We handle all of it.
