Before you flip the main back on.
Floodwater and electricity are a deadly combination, and storm damage isn’t always visible. Here’s what to check first.
In this order.
- 01
Stay away from downed lines
Treat every downed wire as live. Report it to the utility and keep everyone, including pets, far away.
- 02
If water reached outlets or the panel
Leave the main breaker off. Anything that was underwater needs to be inspected and usually replaced before it’s energized.
- 03
Check the meter and the mast
If the weatherhead or meter base on the outside of the house was damaged, the utility may not reconnect until a licensed electrician repairs it.
- 04
Generators outside only
Never in the garage. Keep it well away from windows and doors.
Our storm line
After a storm makes landfall, our office runs a storm line for existing customers first, then the public, for damaged service masts, meter bases and flooded panels. We’ll tell you honestly how long the wait is.
Storm damage? Call the storm line.
The generator site, built in seven days.
Sixteen pages: a live hurricane-season clock, a propane run-time calculator, honest generator sizing, and the Florida license number on every page because state law requires it.
