They work here. Not always alone.
Cold-climate heat pumps keep producing heat at temperatures that would have stopped older models. Whether yours should carry the house alone depends on the house.
Three ways to do it.
When it fits
Tight house, good windows, sound ducts, and you’re fine with electric backup heat on the handful of coldest nights.
Most of our installs
The heat pump handles most of the winter and a gas furnace takes over below a temperature you choose.
Boiler houses
Wall-mounted heads add cooling and shoulder-season heat to a radiator house without touching the boiler.
What “cold-climate” means
The term is used for heat pumps rated to keep delivering a large share of their heating capacity, efficiently, at 5°F. Many keep running well below zero. That’s a real change from heat pumps of fifteen years ago.
Rebates and the tax credit
The federal 25C tax credit for heat pumps ended on December 31, 2025. Xcel Energy has run a cold-climate heat pump rebate for equipment on its qualified list, with larger amounts for income-qualified households. Not every heat pump sold in Minnesota is on that list, so check before you buy. We quote only listed equipment and fill in the paperwork.
When we’ll talk you out of it
If your furnace is less than ten years old and you don’t need cooling, the honest answer is usually to wait. If your ducts are undersized or leaky, fixing them first is often the better spend. And if your electrical panel is full, that’s a cost to include before comparing prices.
