Stone walls
Old walls still standing.
Middle Tennessee is full of dry-laid stone walls built a century or more ago. The good ones share three things: a footing, drainage behind them, and stones laid to lean into the hill.
Limestone & Laurel / Stone walls
Three kinds.
Dry-laid
Fieldstone
No mortar. Stones fitted by hand, battered back into the slope. The traditional Tennessee wall.
Mortared
Cut limestone
Formal walls and steps near the house, with weep holes for drainage.
Engineered
Over four feet
Taller walls are engineered, often with geogrid behind them, and permitted where required.
Wall ranges.
A slope you can’t use? Terrace it.
