Ice dams
Warm attic, cold eaves.
An ice dam forms when heat from the house melts snow on the upper roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. The ice holds back more water, and the water finds its way inside.
Casco / Ice dams
Three fixes.
This winter
Steam it off
We remove ice dams with low-pressure steam, which melts the ice without damaging slate, cedar or shingles. Never hammers or salt pucks.
Next summer
Stop the heat
Air sealing and insulation in the attic keep the roof deck cold, which is what actually stops dams.
At the eaves
Ice and water shield
When we re-roof, a membrane at the eaves keeps backed-up water from getting in.
