Cedar
The silver roof of the coast.
Cedar shingles go silver in a season or two. Installed with stainless nails over an underlayment that breathes, they last decades on the coast.
Casco / Cedar
Why stainless
Cedar contains natural acids that eat ordinary steel and galvanized nails, and salt air speeds it up. A cedar roof nailed with the wrong fasteners fails at the nails long before the wood. We use stainless steel ring-shank nails, every time.
Why the underlayment matters
Cedar needs to dry out between rains. Laid flat on plastic underlayment it stays wet and rots from the back. We use breathable products and, on many coastal roofs, a mesh that leaves an air gap.
Cedar prices.
Thinking cedar? Let’s talk about nails.
